Going to Mass Online

 Going to Mass Online

There is no such thing as a “virtual Mass” — it is The Mass, and the Real Presence! It is also not strictly true to say we are not present physically: we still use our eyes, ears, hands and voices to worship God.

  • Prepare yourself: Don’t leave it till the last minute just because you don’t have to worry about getting to church.

  • Get ready early to leave yourself time to become still and pray.

  • Switch off your phone if it’s in the same room.

  • Prepare your computer: Have the link ready and make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in.

  • Turn off any audible notifications on your computer via the settings menu.

  • If using laptop or tablet, have a stable place to perch your device so you can have both hands free.

  • If you select Full Screen Mode you will not be distracted by other features, such as email notifications.

  • Prepare the space: Think about what else is in your line of sight. You might want to remove any objects that distract you or remind you of work, etc.

  • Light a candle and place a cross or an icon next to your computer.

  • During Mass: Say the responses out loud, and make the sign of the cross as you would in church.

  • Consider standing, sitting and kneeling at the appropriate times.

  • Make all those acts of faith, humility, sorrow, adoration, love and desire that you usually express before Holy Communion.

  • Make a spiritual Communion:

“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You are already there, I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You; do not let me ever be separated from You. Amen.”

  • Take a moment of silent adoration.

  • Make all those acts of faith, humility, love, thanksgiving and offering that you usually express through prayers after Holy Communion.

  • Pray for those who are unable to attend Mass, even online; pray for those who cannot receive Holy Communion even when we are together in church.

  • After Mass: Don’t rush away; take a moment to pray. Thank God for the technology and the people whose work made it possible for you to be at Mass today.

  • If there is a Chat or Comment facility, greet the others who have been at Mass with you. Perhaps leave an uplifting message for someone who needs it today.
